Querétaro To San Miguel de Allende: Find Your Best Way 2024
Not Sure How To Get From Querétaro To San Miguel de Allende? I’ve Got All Your Options
If you’ve been researching how to get to San Miguel de Allende then you’ve probably seen Querétaro pop up a few times, but getting from A to B can be confusing.
I’ve used Querétaro Airport multiple times and made the journey from Querétaro to San Miguel de Allende personally.
So, I’m going to share with you all the ways to get from Querétaro Airport and Santiago de Querétaro (the city) to San Miguel de Allende and help you decide which way is the best for you.
Let’s get into it!
Querétaro Airport To San Miguel de Allende
If you’ve decided to use Querétaro Airport as your gateway to San Miguel de Allende, you have five options to make this journey.
Unlike many other airports in Mexico, Querétaro Airport doesn’t have a robust bus service and there are no direct buses from the airport to San Miguel de Allende.
From Querétaro Airport to San Miguel de Allende the best options for most people are the shuttle service or a taxi service and I’ll cover those first.
By Taxi (Recommended)
Taking a taxi from Querétaro Airport to San Miguel de Allende is definitely the easiest way. Querétaro Airport is located 30mins south of the city of Santiago de Querétaro and it takes about 1.5hrs to drive from here to San Miguel de Allende.
You have two taxi options at the airport, the authorized taxis or a private taxi.
Authorized taxis are available at the airport anytime the airport is open. When you exit the Arrivals doors, just look to your left and you’ll see the taxi booth where you can view prices and make your purchase.
The other option is a private taxi. Personally, I recommend and use Heros Transportation. This is a fantastic local company with English speaking drivers and clean, newer model vehicles. They are highly reliable, reasonably priced, and comfortable.
Heros charges around $950MXN [$51USD/$70CAD] for journeys from Querétaro Airport to San Miguel de Allende which is similar to the authorized taxi prices but you can always contact them via WhatsApp for a more accurate quote.
By Shuttle
If you’re travelling solo a shuttle service could be the better option for you to save some money.
BajioGo is a local San Miguel de Allende company and is the most trusted shuttle service in this part of the country. They offer comfortable, reliable service between Querétaro Airport and San Miguel de Allende any day, any time.
Shuttles currently cost around $480MXN [$30USD/$40CAD] one way from Querétaro Airport to San Miguel de Allende which makes it a great option for solo travellers.
The only downside with the shuttle service is that you may have to wait for other booked passengers to make their way through the airport and to the shuttle. The typical shuttle wait time is 20mins.
By Uber
I don’t usually recommend using Uber to make this journey for three main reasons, the location of the airport, luggage accommodation, and the cost.
Because Querétaro Airport is located 30mins outside the city, wait times for Uber can really vary.
If there is an Uber already in the area or dropping someone off, you may only have to wait about five minutes for a match. But, if there are no Ubers already at the airport you could be looking at wait times of up to 20 minutes or more.
Another issue with using Uber is that depending on how many people are in your party and how many bags you have, you may need to request a larger Uber which can mean longer wait times and higher prices.
Uber is often a great choice for affordable rides in Mexico but for this particular journey it almost always works out to be more expensive and less convenient than a prearranged private service like Heros Transportation.
By Car
I don’t recommend taking a car to San Miguel de Allende because you really don’t need it and it’s very difficult to find parking. But if you decide you want to have a car for day trips from San Miguel de Allende or road trips you can easily rent one at Querétaro Airport.
There is a huge variety of rental car vendors available at the airport so take your pick!
The drive from Querétaro Airport to San Miguel de Allende is pretty straight forward and the road is in great condition but it is not advisable that you make this journey at night.
If your flight arrives after or near nightfall I strongly recommend you spend the night at a hotel and make your journey in the morning. You can find more information about hotels and rental cars in the Querétaro Airport Guide.
By Bus
As I mentioned before, there are no direct buses from Querétaro Airport to San Miguel de Allende and limited buses from the airport to Santiago de Querétaro.
So while I normally recommend taking first class buses in Mexico, I don’t recommend it in this case.
Buses currently cost $76MXN [$4.30USD/$6CAD] and depart Querétaro Airport at 10:30am, 1pm, 4pm and 6pm daily directly to Querétaro Bus Terminal.
Once you reach Querétaro Bus Terminal you’ll need to switch to a bus service to San Miguel de Allende which I’ll cover in the next section.
Querétaro To San Miguel de Allende
If you’ve made it to this section it means you’re probably considering spending a few days in Querétaro before moving on and I love that for you! Querétaro is definitely worth a visit so I’m sure you won’t regret it.
Getting from Querétaro to San Miguel de Allende is actually a lot easier from the city than it is from the airport, plus the city is 30mins closer. So let’s explore the options from here.
By Bus (Recommended)
I am a big, big fan of using first class buses in Mexico. Mexico has some of the nicest bus services I’ve seen anywhere in the world and they are a safe, affordable, and very comfortable way to get around.
Buses run all day long from Querétaro Bus Terminal to San Miguel de Allende and getting to and from the bus terminals in both cities is easy with Uber and DiDi.
The bus service I recommend is ETN which is actually my favourite bus service in the whole country. The seats are basically like flying business class, with huge comfy cushions, leg rests, tv screens, charging ports, cup holders, and more.
And the best part is, it’s inexpensive! I paid around $110MXN [$6USD/$8CAD] to make this 1hr 15min journey and even at 4x the price, it would have been a bargain.
By Taxi
If you’re nervous about the bus or just want a door to door service then a taxi is a great way to go.
I recommend using a private taxi service for this rather than a metered taxi because the price will be confirmed in advance and the comfort and quality of ride will be higher.
The company I always recommend and use for private taxis in Querétaro is Heros Transportation. They speak excellent English and the standard of service is really high.
Heros charges around $900MXN [$50USD/$68CAD] from Querétaro to San Miguel de Allende and you can contact them via WhatsApp to quote and book.
By Uber
Uber operates in both Querétaro and San Miguel de Allende along with DiDi. Both of these apps are great ways to get around the cities but I don’t necessarily recommend them for travelling between the cities.
Uber would be a good option if you don’t want to take the bus and are travelling last minute. But if you’re making plans in advance then again, a first class bus or private taxi is going to be cheaper, more comfortable, and more reliable.
UberX from Querétaro to San Miguel de Allende starts around $970MXN [$52USD/$71CAD] which is slightly more than booking a service like Heros Transportation and much more than taking a bus.
By Car
Before deciding to take a car to San Miguel de Allende, I strongly recommend you speak to your accommodation about the parking situation.
Parking in San Miguel de Allende is hard to come by at the best of times and with narrow colonial streets, cobblestones, and one ways, driving isn’t a party either.
San Miguel de Allende is a safe place to explore on foot and with taxis, Ubers, and DiDis aplenty plus frequent bus connections, it’s easy to explore everything from hot springs to neighbouring towns without a car.
However, if you decide you want to drive then the journey from Querétaro to San Miguel de Allende is simple and easy.
Before setting off make sure you download an offline map of the area using Google Maps because you will pass through areas of no signal.
There are no tolls on this road and you really can’t go wrong because Highway 111 goes right into San Miguel de Allende.
