Thinking about staying at Hotel Aldea del Bazar in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca?

Finding the right place to stay can make or break any trip. When I arrived in Puerto Escondido and my Airbnb wasn’t exactly as advertised, I was left scrambling to find somewhere to stay before the sun went down. This frantic Googling led me to Hotel Aldea del Bazar.

In this review I will cover all of the pros and cons of this hotel, exactly what to expect from your stay, and help you decide if this property is worth your time and money.

Hotel Aldea del Bazar

This boutique hotel at the top end of Puerto Escondido can only be described as an oasis. Walking into Hotel Aldea del Bazar after leaving behind an Airbnb nightmare, I was instantly at ease and felt like I’d hit the hotel jackpot.

This wasn’t a Plan B anymore, it was an upgrade, and I went on to spend a total of 9 nights at this boutique hotel.

Would I Stay Here Again?

One of my favourite ways to assess my accommodation is by asking myself if I would stay here again, and the short answer is yes.

Location

Hotel Aldea del Bazar is situated at the top end of Puerto Escondido in the neighbourhood of Bacocho, less than 5 minutes drive from the airport.

Puerto Escondido is comprised of several distinct neighbourhoods, each with their own personality. Bacocho is a quiet and safe neighbourhood and a great place to stay when you want to be near the action but not in the heart of it.

This area is popular with families, couples, and travellers in their late 20s and up.

Surrounding Area

This boutique hotel is walkable to a few convenience stores and is about a 10 minute walk to the Rinconada, a strip of excellent restaurants and bars, including the incomparable Almoraduz offering handcrafted cocktails and modern Oaxacan cuisine.

  • The walk to the Rinconada doesn’t have sidewalks/footpaths so I don’t recommend doing this walk in the dark.

Hotel Aldea del Bazar is also located close to two of the best beaches in Puerto Escondido, Playa Bacocho and Playa Carrizalillo. The entrance to Playa Carrizalillo is a set of stairs on the Rinconada and Playa Bacocho is less than 10 minutes walking down a steep hill.

Bacocho and Carrizalillo is where to stay in Puerto Escondido when you want to be close to the action but not in it
A hidden staircase takes your down the stunning bay of Playa Carrizalillo.

To access other areas of Puerto Escondido you will need to rent a car or scooter, or take a taxi. Taking a taxi in Puerto Escondido is easy and inexpensive.

A taxi from Hotel Aldea del Bazar to somewhere in the same area of Puerto Escondido like the Rinconada should cost around $35MXN [$1.75USD/$2.40CAD] during the day. Taxi fares become looser at night so this same journey may cost $50MXN [$2.50USD/$3.50CAD].

To travel from Hotel Aldea del Bazar to the bottom end of Puerto Escondido, like the neighbourhood of La Punta will cost around $50MXN [$2.50USD/$3.50CAD] during the day and up to $80MXN [$3.90USD/$4.90CAD] at night.

  • Always agree on a price before entering the taxi.

Service

I was very happy with the service at Hotel Aldea del Bazar. The front desk is open 24/7 and the staff were exceedingly helpful. Even with limited English, did their best to accommodate any requests.

The staff were happy to call taxis, book spa treatments, and even helped me arrange transportation to Mazunte after my own driver didn’t arrive.

English is very limited amongst the staff so I do recommend learning a few key phrases to make communication easier. You can also pick up the free Useful Mexican Words and Phrases Cheatsheet at the bottom of this page, and download Spanish Offline from the Google Translate App.

Housekeeping & Cleanliness

The housekeeping staff do a fantastic job of keeping the rooms clean. They were happy to come back later if I wasn’t ready to leave my room and make sure I received complimentary bottled water.

Happily, I didn’t find any insects, questionable stains or grime in my room during my 9 days at the hotel. All towels and linens were regularly washed and felt and smelled clean.

Rooms

All of the 47 rooms at the Hotel Aldea del Bazar are the same but with slightly different layouts. The rooms are very spacious with comfortable beds, spacious seating area with a table and a large window which gives lots of light.

I had a ground floor room but didn’t see any insects or lizards in my room at any time. The room was very quiet and I was never bothered by noise from the pool.

  • My room was near the reception and one night a large group checked in quite late. If you are sensitive to noise you may want to request a room further from reception.

Finding air-conditioned rooms in Puerto Escondido can be a challenge but Hotel Aldea del Bazar offers this in their spacious rooms.

The bathrooms are spacious but suitable for one person to use at a time. The toilet and large walk-in shower are in a separate room with a locking door and the sink, mirror and vanity is located just outside that door.

The shower was clean with good water pressure, hot water on demand and a non-slip mat. It also features a wall niche to store your products.

Fresh towels are available every day but some of them are a little worn, but for the price tag I think we can forgive them!

Hotel Aldea del Bazar offers large walk-in showers with strong, hot water on demand.

All rooms are the same and include the following:

  • Two Large Double Beds
  • Down Comforters
  • Strong In Room Air-Conditioning
  • Spacious Rooms
  • Free In Room WIFI
  • Two Bottled Waters Per Room Per Day
  • Daily Housekeeping
  • TV With Local Channels
  • Closet Space
  • Small Daily Hygiene Bottles
  • Large Walk-In Shower
  • Non-Slip Shower Mat
  • Seating Area With Table
  • Writing Desk
  • Large Window
  • Hot Water On Demand

Amenities

The Hotel Aldea del Bazar offers a variety of amenities that are great for families, couples and solo travellers. The peaceful setting of the hotel makes this a great place to spend time relaxing.

Pool

The swimming pool is the jewel in the crown of the Hotel Aldea del Bazar in Puerto Escondido. The pool area is beautifully maintained with plenty of sun loungers and cabanas to choose from.

The pool was immaculately clean every day I was there and the surrounding areas offer partial ocean views.

The Hotel Aldea del Bazar grounds offer a partial ocean view over Playa Bacocho, one of the best beaches in Puerto Escondido.

There are three areas to the swimming pool: the covered area with steps, the main area (approximately 5 feet/1.2m deep), and the small shallow area (approximately 2 feet/0.6m deep).

There is poolside service for food and drinks but I did find it difficult to find service at times.

Food & Drink

The on-site restaurant offers a variety of typical hotel food like sandwiches, fries and pasta, as well as Mexican dishes like chilaquiles and tacos. They also offer a variety of alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, and coffees.

  • I stayed at Hotel Aldea del Bazar during the pandemic and the restaurant was not serving food at this time. While the reviews are positive, I have only had beverage from the on-site restaurant and therefore cannot comment on the quality of food.

Spa

The spa at the Hotel Aldea del Bazar is only open when appointments are booked. Treatments are limited to massages, body treatments (like a mud bath), and Temazcal (a traditional Mexican sweat lodge).

It is difficult to find spa services in Puerto Escondido but the Hotel Aldea del Bazar offers affordable treatments on site.
The spa at the Hotel Aldea del Bazar is located just off the main parking lot and offers affordable treatments.

The spa is open-roof and fairly exposed. I was the only person using the spa at the time of my massage and the massage tables are located in an open area. While it was nice to feel the sun and breeze on my back, if you are a shy person this may not be the right environment for you.

Also, because of the open-roof design there is quite a lot of plant debris that collects on the ground, making this spa feel quite rustic.

Prices are very reasonable and I really enjoyed my relaxing massage but it is important to note that this is not a luxury spa.

Spa treatments and rates can be found on the screen in the hotel reception.

Summary: Hotel Aldea del Bazar

All in all, I really enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Aldea del Bazar in Puerto Escondido. This is an affordable, mid-range property in an excellent part of town.

It can be difficult to find certain amenities for an affordable price in Puerto Escondido like air-conditioning, WIFI, and a pool but Hotel Aldea del Bazar offers all of this.

Throw in a fantastic location, gorgeous amenities and top notch service, I think you’re onto a winner. And while you’re in Puerto Escondido don’t miss out on the best mezcal experience around.
